The Strain on the grid, if you have millions more vehicles that require charging what does that do. Can we transition to completely to battery powered vehicles, I say no requires massive amounts of rare earth metals. Will combustion engines go away? No, I think there is still refinement to be made, and synthetic fuel will eventually become more cheaper and available. If that it what’s required to keep petrol engines around.

So everyone changes to an ev. Its 2035, by this time there would be some millions of them in use in the UK. Its OK there's a charging station on nearly every street. But how can we hope to have in place the power generating capacity that would be needed. Has anyone done the sums??

I’m kind of scared to drive an EV because of the Lithium Ion Batteries beneath you. When that much charge is stored in a battery and that battery becomes compromised because of some idiot that rear ends you, ALL of that charge gets expelled OUT of the battery it was stored in. Some Engineers say “The more charge you store in a battery, the more like a bomb it becomes…”. However, the Insurance Companies are not willing to waive the risk that they explode to insure them. For this reason, Teslas are insured by Tesla exclusively. Personally, I do not trust Tesla.

C5 V8 is not the B7 RS4 V8/R8 unit. The unit in the C5 was about in the A8 as a 4.2 32v and around 300bhp way before this. For S6 it was modified with 5v cylinder heads to 340bhp and 360bhp for the D2 S8. Two turbos did the business on it for the C5 RS6. But the unit in the later RS4 and R8, whilst being equally 4.2 although actually a few cc less than those earlier engines, was a totally different engine.

Electrical engineer here, coming from a family of electrical engineers. It was frustrating listening to the EV/hydrogen fueling talk toward the end. The thing you're fighting with EVs and hydrogen fuel are well-established, very old problems in physics which will not be resolved unless there's a breakthrough in chemistry and/or material science that enables a doubling or tripling of power density while scaling or retaining current levels of durability, manufacturability, cost, safety, and charge/discharge rate. There's no telling when that'll happen. Chemistry and material science are among the oldest and slowest moving fields. All the relevant elements are known, all of the low-hanging fruit as been harvested, etc. Consequently, the pace of improvement is linear and slow. Of course you'll find innumerable papers claiming a new discovery will soon provide 2X or 3X the present power density but those promises almost never pan out. The reasons why new battery technologies come out every 30-60 years are innumerable, but the engineering factors are: 1) durability (i.e. # of cycles before breakdown, temperature/pressure/shock vulnerability), 2) manufacturability, 3) cost, 4) safety issues (primarily toxicity--if you think lithium ion is bad you should look at the other stuff that has been proposed), and 5) discharge/charge rate. Most industry articles and papers are published before a new battery technology has passed a single one of those gates, and virtually none make it through them all. The major exception, which my dad worked on, was lithium ion. Lithium ion isn't a new technology (first working example in the 1970s), but what made it begin to become practicable in the 1990s was the falling costs of microcontrollers and sensors to provide overcurrent, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection. Back in the early 90's my dad told me that developing the first-generation protection systems for these batteries was "scary." Higher energy density in chemistry always equals more scary and a greater need to tightly control operating parameters. Hydrogen I know less about, but for it to be economical, you first need to migrate the entire world to nuclear because you can't make hydrogen economical without it (not to mention the greenhouse gases emitted with conventional energy would offset any benefit provided by hydrogen). Even if you solve the hydrogen generation problem (get started on it now, call me back in 60 years), the next problem is hydrogen's abysmal energy density; it's a gas and it's extremely difficult to store enough. The 2024 Miraj stores hydrogen at 12500 PSI using carbon fiber cylinders. If you're familiar with pressure vessel design, that's reaching the limits of what is practicable with cutting edge material science. The car starts at $51k with a $15k government subsidy and free fuel for 3 years (thanks, taxpayers). It only produces 182 HP, which is miserable. All in all, hydrogen is not a viable product for practical automobiles and won't be in our lifetimes. You don't see a lot of electrical engineers driving EVs or alternative technology vehicles, and very few I know champion them even though it's in EE's self-interest to promote them. It's not because of a lack of enthusiasm or motivation--on the EE-side the controllers and motors are ready for primetime, and we're all geeks at heart--the problem is these EV systems have a weak heart, which is energy storage, and any future battery developments to EEs is like talking about practical fusion power.

  • @JeredtheShy

The EV situation has really shone a spotlight on how it was never really the car, but the infrastructure of the car, especially the gas stations on every block, and the roads, that made the car work. It's not REALLY a climate solution, that's trains and public transport. Because of that, it's not cool with young people, maybe it was for a minute but not really, and of course it will never please the Clarksons of the world, who want to wake up the worms in the morning. It's an attempt at a solution that is refusing real change, that only works well for people with a house, in a world where fewer and fewer people think they can ever own a house. It's the only real way forward for the car, but it's also not the way forward, because the way forward isn't the car.

You can never charge any battery to 100% within any reasonable time. This is the problem with battery. The time it takes to get to 100% increase drastically as the charge get closer and closer too max. Going from 0-50% would take 5 minutes but then 51-80 is about 15minutes to a total of 20 minutes and we're not even maxed out. Then 81-99 is about 30minutes. The cost to replace is also unreasonable especially when the life expectancy of any battery diminish over time the second after the first charge making you battery less capable of holding the same amount of power. You have to have $15-20k on the side saved just in case the battery on your $50-100k EV dies. This is insanity.

as a sort of related field graduate I would say EV is basically a not in my backyard style false hope.. the batteries needs a lot of lithium, which the mining or recycling consumes a ton of power and is very toxic, while power stations are more efficient than an ICE, if majority of ppl change to EV, one will need to build up extra capacity 24/7 to allow for daily charges of EV overnight, which, will inevitably have a lot more wasted capacity offsetting the efficiency, and also the extra weight makes tyre and brakes wears out much faster than petrol cars, together with the fact that car crahses left and right in daily life, and EVs, once involved in a major crash will have ruptured batteries, which is not extinguishable and you have to let the toxic battery burn out completely... which IMO ended up being even more polluting, kind of like how plastic was believed to be the saviour of environment back then just because it "replace the need to chop down a crap load of trees"

This is going to sound like a really dumb comparison, but bare with me... Gas Bottles. Campers and Caravaners can go to a shop in the country when they are low on their gas and pay a fee to swap their bottle for a fully filled one. These shops might have dozens of them just sat there waiting for people to come over and swap for them. The only way the batteries for cars will become as efficient as we want is when we can literally just go to a shop and swap the out easily for fully charged batteries/cells that can be replaced as quickly and safely as you can the AAA's/AA's in your TV remote. The will need to be universal across all manufacturers like all batteries are.

If I'm completely honest, I'm a huge electric vehicle supporter. But not electric _cars._ I would rather champion electric trains, trams, and bicycles. I still think cars, including electric cars, have a place. But between the traffic, the noise (tyre noise is louder than most engines these days!), and how slow cars are compared to the above (not to mention how often cars crash...), I think our 2035 target should be on electric vehicles that _aren't cars._ So I think James is completely right that electric cars just aren't there right now. Perhaps they never will be? Like he said, they're expensive to maintain because the batteries are the thing that will crap out the most, they still cause the same traffic in cities, and just think of how much land all of those park and charge spots will take up! I'd rather have a tram system in my city that runs as often as the tube, and a train network for connecting between towns that does 200kmph minimum. All the benefits of electric cars, but with none of the drawbacks. Cheaper on the pocket too - definitely wouldn't cost me £30,000 every few years just to go see my mates!

Neither of these can be considered a average sports car n especially not a true supercar because of the sound, below average, they need a engine swap, who asked for turbos? Keep the hp in fact its better with less hp. The ferrari sounds like it wants to sing n has a beautiful voice underneath but is being strangled to death by turbos, the mclaren is severly neutered and I cant even tell how it would sound without turbos since its so badly strangled by turbos. The mclarens have so mich potential n there so good but the engine just detroys the whole soul, if u just swap a m5 v10 in there with a manual trans, it would be a absolute masterpiece.

I never thought about it that way but James might be right. its not range anxiety its recharge anxiety. Why ICE cars still popular over EV is simply because it refuels in handful of minutes compared to most EV even the fastest ones only charges from 10-80% >20mins. Another thing with recharge anxiety is also due to, lack of changers , charging compatibility, output of chargers(with fast chargers not being so widespread) meanwhile ICE didnt have this problem. but it is also slightly due to range anxiety. most ICE still outrange most EV. but you cant use that argument against EV evangelist because their argument is "everyone has to stop and eat/pee. by the time you fuel up, pee and bought a sweet, my charging would be done"
